Well look what we spotted on our way into the office this morning. Yep, that's a 2012 BMW M5. Look at all of those exhaust pipes.

Sadly, this is the only image we got. Something about a guy with an SLR alerted this driver to what we were up to and he took full advantage of that twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 and bolted.

BMW to create new brand; hopes for CKD issue resolution

Jayanta Ghosh, TNN, Mar 16, 2011, 05.58am IST

MUNICH: As part of a global initiative, German carmaker BMW has decided to create a new brand - called BMWi - within the group. The brand will co-exist with others like BMW, Mini and Rolls Royce. "It will be a sub-brand ," said Andreas Schaaf, president, BMW India.

"Objective of this new brand is to primarily target the youth segment with the technology of the future," he said. Products from this brand will be mainly for the developed markets like US and Europe, not immediately for India. But, in future, India will also be included in the list of markets under this brand.

Being bullish on the 70% growth in volumes in India last year, the luxury carmaker will also bring new models in due course of time. However , there is no definite plan towards this end, one board member said at the annunal accounts press conference here. The company is also developing second generation of BMW1 series, which will be launched in mature and emerging markets, including India. BMW will also double its dealership network in India by 2012, to ensure its presence in all relevant regions.

On imposition of higher duty on CKD units in the Budget , one official said, the company is talking to the Indian government and hopes the issue will be resolved within four to eight weeks, without elaborating further.
"We are committed to India," said Schaaf. "In India, BMW has been the market leader in the premium segment since 2007. This month, we have raised our local production capacity to 10,000 units. We have invested around 17 million euros in our plant in India since 2007," said Norbert Reithofer , chairman of the board of management of BMW AG, in a statement at the conference.

"Currently, our plant in Chennai assembles BMW 3 series and 5 series sedans as well as X1 models. In addition , we will also assemble the BMW X3 in India from the second quarter onwards," he added. The company is also developing BMW i3, its first all electric vehicle for the world's urban centres.

Globally, the models that will be launched by BMW in coming months include new BMW 6 series convertible and coupe, new BMW 1 series M coupe, the new BMW M5, the new MINI Coupe, apart from the second generation of the BMW 1 series.

"With record revenues of 60.5 billion euros, the BMW Group was able to achieve unprecedented pre-tax earnings of 4.8 billion euros. Our return on sales, based on pretax profit, amounted to 8%. A good fourth quarter played a big part in this. We generated strong quarterly revenues of 16.75 billion euros and pretax group earnings of just under 1.7 billion euros," said Friedrich Eichiner, a board member.

Pre-loved Luxury

From Certified Pre-owned Vehicles, a special advertising feature

Your dream car is suddenly within reach

BMW's spectacular M5: suddenly, magically within reach

BMW's spectacular M5: suddenly, magically within reach

If the words "certified pre-owned” conjure visions of plain-vanilla transportation, it’s time to re-imagine that concept. Start by adding “exciting” and even “exotic” to the mix.

One of the best features of CPO programs is that they can put drivers behind the wheel of their dream car — refurbished luxury sleds that most buyers can’t touch as new models.

In fact, prestige brands Lexus, Jaguar and Mercedes-Benz were among the pioneers of the CPO concept back in the ’90s. They were joined soon after by programs from BMW, Audi and (eventually) virtually all of the usual luxury suspects — including relatively recent converts Ferrari, Maserati and, yes, even Bentley.

Let’s say you see yourself in a BMW 3-Series sedan, an iconic entry-level luxury model that’s more accessible than ever as a CPO. A recent search on third-party site Cars.com showed plenty of late-model local rides, like a slick black 2008 328i with a sticker price less than $24,000. Being certified, it’s been polished to nearly new condition and has fewer than 30,000 miles. In fact, no BMW makes the certified cut unless it falls within a five-year, 60,000-mile range. And all certified BMWs are backed by a warranty that spans a full six years and 100,000 miles.

Behold the magic of CPO — making prestige rides appear in budget driveways. For manufacturers and dealers of high-end autos, it’s all about bringing the brand to a wider audience.

“Our CPO vehicle program has helped to broaden BMW’s customer base in the U.S. considerably,” said Peter Miles, executive vice president of BMW of North America. “It is an important tool in attracting a new generation of BMW buyers and we expect many to move up to new vehicles when the market improves.”

Used exotics
Want to get behind the wheel of a 2008 Bentley Continental Flying Spur and harness its mighty 552-horsepower 6-liter W-12? Maybe an Azure drop-top is more your style.

Bentley offers these CPO models and more, none older than seven model years. Each qualified Bentley undergoes a 154-point reconditioning process — even the lambs-wool rugs are inspected — protected by a comprehensive one-year warranty with unlimited mileage.

Ferrari Maserati Beverly Hills recently listed a 2004 Ferrari 360 Spider F1 convertible — with just a smidge over 3,000 miles — for $115,000. (For comparison’s sake, a new 458 Italia Spider — successor to the 360 and 430 convertibles — is expected to start north of $250,000.) The same dealership put up a 2005 Ferrari 430 F1, decked out in a “grigio Silverstone” finish, for $139,900 — still a pup with only 11,289 miles. That’s a relative pittance for this sexy low-slung rocket born of Formula One heritage and bearing a 490-horsepower V-8.

Ferrari’s recently re-tooled program only accepts models up to 8 years old — with no more than 60,000 miles — and the reconditioning process covers 190 points. All certified Ferraris get a 24-month factory-based warranty from date of certified purchase.

Maserati is even more selective, only accepting models that fall within five years and 90,000 miles — and the values are head spinning.

Recent deals (within a 30-mile radius as listed on Cars.com) included a 2007 Quattroporte for less than $49,000 or a flashy 2008 GranTurismo coupe listed for under $68,000. Certified Maseratis are protected by a limited warranty that spans one year from the date of certified purchase or 90,000 total miles, with 24-hour roadside assistance.
Premium green
Eco-friendly luxury is finally hitting the CPO market in a big way. High-end hybrids have been around for about six years, and have recently been joined trendy clean-diesel models — the latter especially dominated by luxury brands.

Leading the way for Mercedes-Benz is the clean-diesel E320 BlueTEC, which debuted in 2006. R-, ML- and GL-Class 320 BlueTEC models are also available, each of which packs a V-6 engine rated at 211 horsepower and 25 mpg highway. Only models with fewer than 75,000 miles get into the Benz program.

New to certified lots, the Audi A3 TDI offers the same entry-level luxury as its gas-powered A3 brethren and can be found heavily discounted at less than $25,000. This hot hatchback comes with Audi’s comprehensive 300-plus-point inspection and coverage spanning six years and 100,000 miles.

It’s joined in the ranks of newly available CPOs by Audi’s pioneering TDI clean-diesel Q7 SUV, which packs 225 horsepower and offers a range of more than 600 highway miles per tank. Of course, the Q7 TDI has the quiet ride and distinctive options expected of a luxury SUV, including navigation and panorama sunroof.

Lexus offers a handful of luxury hybrid CPO models, including the popular GS 450h, a high-performance sedan with a 3.5-liter V-6 engine rated at 292 horsepower and 25 mpg — proving that green does not necessarily preclude muscle.

Also proliferating among certified ranks is the Lexus RX 400h SUV, billed as the first luxury utility vehicle when it debuted in 2005. It’s a spacious and versatile ride with a 3.3-liter V-6 engine rated at up to 33 mpg. Each RX 400h gets a 131-point inspection and coverage spanning three years from certified purchase or 100,000 total miles.

Billed as the most fuel-efficient luxury vehicle in the U.S., the Lexus HS 250h sedan is a flashy mix of glitz and green, sporting a combined EPA rating of 35 mpg from a 2.5-liter 187-horsepower four-cylinder engine — further proof that eco-conscious values can play well with high performance.

The New 2011 BMW 528i at a Glance - A Simple Review of the Car Known As Beemer

The BMW has historically enjoyed a reputation as being the "elite" or "grand".

Ride around in a "Beemer" as they are fondly called, and you project an air of sophistication and elegance. After all being in the same class as a Mercedes, Jaguar or a Rolls Royce puts you in very good company indeed. The people at BMW designed the 5 series for a market that are not only part of the elite, but who enjoy a good romp as well.

The BMW 528I is considered the smaller brother in the 5 series sedans.

Like it's other brethren it shares the same distinctive elegant lines, it's the type of car where one would bring the family around safely, in absolute comfort and on time. It has all the refinements expected of a BMW 5 series class.

The 528i aerodynamically has an aggressive stance, not so much as you would expect in a sports car but one that commands attention on the road.

The distinctive grille, that serves as the marquee of a Beemer focuses your attention to the long elegant hood, the sloping lines to the tightly wrapped rear end.The 528i has a roomy interior that seats the family with ease. The plush leather and wood trim identify with the class of owner of a BMW. For the driver, a wide angle view of the controls and gauges provide information instantly when needed.

This is where the 528i differs from its brethren.

Sporting a 3.0 liter inline six, BMW went to work on this models powerhouse, boosting an additional 10 HP from its predecessor and an additional 30 Ft-lb's of torque, to round it off as 240 and 230 respectively. Although making more muscle BMW has yet to realize a more powerful package in the 528i. Torque output was a little low, and the 240 hp is only realized at 6600 rpm. But this is where the 528i niche is, an elegant and more economy focused sporty sedan. EPA rated 22 mpg city driving and 32 mpg on the freeway.

The 528i sports the 8 speed automatic with manumatic shifting of BMW, good enough for the more sedate of drivers. It leaves those more in tuned to a more sporty style of driving yearning for the company's 6 speed manual gearbox.

The 528i is one of the first in it's generation to have the new electric power steering.

It has a smooth solid feel that make driving this car seem effortless. It is perfect for the laid back driver, who wants to get to his destination with a minimum of effort. The down side is the lack of feedback, this makes driving the car a bit artificial.

The new BMW 528i provides what the market wants in a 5 series base model, elegance, comfort and style. It's a car that takes you where you want to go, and look good in it as well.

2011 BMW 5 Series Saloon

This is the great car.

The brand name BMW has always brought forth the image of quality and luxury. Everything from their sedans to their race cars have maintained an element of grace and beauty that is hard to match in the auto industry. BMW was founded in 1916 and is the parent company of Rolls Royce. The company has enjoyed a long history of automotive development and continues to keep its place on the cutting edge of technology.

Nothing epitomizes this better then the BMW 5 series. The 5 series has been in production since the mid 70's and fills the category of mid size executive car. Currently the series is entering its sixth generation with new advancements in technology and materials. Currently it is sold in sedan and touring car models.

The series has done so well that many European nations use cars in this class as police cars and government vehicles. Make no mistake the cars not only look nice but their performance matches their appeal. Add to the fact that they are durable and very comfortable and you have a winning combination. All of these features justify the price tag that is asked for each and every model.

Of course this has been true of the early models as well. With each update in the series the cars in the lineup have received overhauls, upgrades, modifications, and redesigns to make them more appealing. Add to the mix that BMW is constantly upgrading its engine lineup to be more powerful yet more fuel efficient at the same time and you have a very reliable series.

Another statistic that's constantly under revision between series upgrades is the size of the vehicles themselves. Sometimes adding half an inch here and two inches here can make all the difference in a car. This applies to all cars not just luxury or sports models. BMW has taken this into consideration, especially since its cars are so readily available to so many.

People of different ethnic backgrounds usually have different body proportions as well. That being said the constant upgrade and redesign of the size and the interior is designed to be a one size fits all. This is for the short and skinny to the tall and rotund. Safety is another feature that's constantly upgraded and the 2011 series is no slouch in this area either.

Aerodynamics are reworked with each generation to give newer models a sleeker and more modern appearance. This of course affects more than just appearance and increases the handling of the cars themselves. It can also improve fuel economy as better aerodynamics means less resistance to the car which equals less work for the engine to do. This is something that every car manufacture tries to accomplish but BMW manages to outperform the rest as usual.

BMW's 5 series is one of the most prominent car lineups in the world. As they begin to bring in the six series cars many car fans can't help but be overtaken with a feeling of glee. After all inside every man or woman that admires cars is a driver that wants to get behind the wheel and see what it can do.
